Counting our blessings

Posted by: Jennifer

Last week, I received a phone call at school.  It was one of the office administrators at the school board office asking me to come in and meet the associate superintendent regarding my leave of absence.  So I made the appointment for today, not quite sure what this was all about.  It turns out the board wants to give me a continuing contract - something that's a little unusual.  Let me explain.  Right now, I have a probationary contract.  Basically I have to prove myself to be a worthy teacher before the board will give me a continuing contract which will guarantee my job from one school year to the next.  With a probationary contract, the board and the school owe me nothing as far as giving me a job when I return from my parental leave.  I would have to start over again looking for a job once I was ready to go back to work.  However, God is looking out for me, because both the associate superintendent and my principal want me back at Gilbert Paterson next year, and in order to do that, we're skipping a step in the process and going straight to the continuing contract.  Not only that, but if I wanted to, I was told I could take the full school year off and start fresh in Fall 2006.  We'll have to see how finances go before I make that kind of decision.  Needless to say, Jose and I are feeling very blessed right now.  It is so nice to have some job security, and to know that I'll be going back to a school that I'm happy working at.
Bye for now

5 more sleeps

Posted by: Jennifer & Jose

We get Sam in just five more sleeps.  Jose and I are very excited, as are our families.  Paul is especially jealous, as he loves Basset Hounds.  We're just praying that Baby doesn't come too early!!  If Baby would be so kind as to be born right on the due date, Jose and I would be infinitely grateful.  We were in Medicine Hat this weekend.  We got to see many people we haven't seen in a while, it was great.  We also got to say goodbye to Pastor Raul Gurdian as it was his last sermon as the pastor of the Medicine Hat Spanish Church.  He is moving up north and we wish him the best.

How time does fly

Posted by: Jennifer

I can't believe it's been a week since I posted anything!  Sorry about that for those of you who are avid followers of our humble little blog.  The last week has been rather eventful.  Claire and Miguel came to visit over the weekend, and I got a new hairdo.  It really is true that hormones affect your hair when you're pregnant.  The colour that Claire put in wasn't nearly as dark as it should have been, and the highlights weren't nearly as light as they should have been.  However, I'm happy with it.  I got a nice cut too.  Claire got a little carried away with the bangs (they were supposed to be layers!), but again, it turned out really nicely.  I like it, and I've had lots of complements on it.  Jose got some highlights put in his hair too.  They look really good on him.  It was really nice to get a chance to hang out with them for a bit.  We had quite a good time.  On Monday, we took them out to see our puppy.  He's just so cute!!  The breeder said we can get him a few days early so that he can get used to us and our house over the weekend.  Also on Monday, we found out my dad is getting re-married, which came as quite a shock.  I don't have any students this week, which can sometimes be a nice change.  Yesterday we had the middle school mini conference, today was a PD day at school, and tomorrow and Friday are Teachers' Convention.  I think, other than that, nothing much is new.  I'm glad that it's already Wednesday, because it means the weekend is nice and close.
Enjoy the rest of the week

Happy Belated Valentine's Day

Posted by: Jennifer

I hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day, and that you got to spend it with loved ones.  Jose and I kept it fairly low key.  I made a nice supper, and we took our time over it, and basically just enjoyed the chance to spend some quality time together. We are painfully aware that those days are going to be fewer and farther between after the baby's born.  Next Valentine's Day, we're going to need a babysitter if we want to go out and do something!
Before Valentine's Day, we had a nice weekend.  We got to see both our mums.  Mine came on Friday, and we spent the day tootling around Lethbridge.  She brought a friend of hers who is an architect, and had never been to Lethbridge, so we had a good time exploring the university, and getting a look at the train bridge.
Jose's mom came on Saturday.  Sadly, we didn't get to spend as much time with her, because she was getting her hair done.  But we got to take her out for a belated birthday supper, and she did look fabulous, so it was time well spent for her.  We spent the rest of the evening at Natalia's, watching a movie while Natalia and Jose's mom made sushi.  Jose was thrilled.

New Baby!!

Posted by: Jennifer

No, Baby hasn't been born yet, we just wanted to freak people out a little.  However, there has been a new addition to our small, but growing family.  On March 8th, Sam, the Basset Hound will be coming to his new home.  He will be 8 weeks old when he comes here.  He is the spontaneous thing I was talking about in my post from this morning.  We went out to see these Basset Hound puppies because Natalia wanted to go look.  Jose would have written a cheque right then and there, but I convinced him to at least talk it over.  His mind was made up, and it really didn't take much to convince me.  For those of you who think we're nuts, you could be right.  I think this is a good time to get a puppy.  I'll have a year at home to spend training him (I know, I'll have other things as well), and by the time Baby is old enough to be moving around, he'll be trained to go outside, and we don't have to worry about Baby eating little "presents" off of the doggie papers.  If you're still not convinced, look at him!!  He is TOO CUTE - so wrinkly and soft with his little legs, and big ears.... I could go on and on.  Besides, you can look at the pictures.  Click on them to see them bigger.

Are we Crazy?

I think we really have lost it.  We say we're not spontaneous, but we are.  I'll post some pictures this afternoon and show you what I mean.

Winter is back

Posted by: Jennifer

I guess I shouldn't complain, seeing how it is February, but we are experiencing some more winter weather.  We got a bit of snow over the weekend (not nearly as much as before though).  Actually, it's not so much the snow I mind, or even the cold.  It's the fact that I look like I've been stuffed into my winter coat that bothers me.  It still closes, but it's definitely not flattering, and it hurts my vanity to go out in it.  Oh well, less than two months, and then it will fit normally again.
We did end up having a good weekend, as predicted.  We didn't go to Medicine Hat, but Jose's mum is coming here next weekend, so we'll celebrate her birthday with her then.  Speaking of celebrating, Jose overdid the celebrating of boys' night on Friday a bit.  Being the spectacular wife I am, I picked him up, as well as his drunken buddies, drove them all home, cringed only slightly as two of them (Jose included) decorated the side of the car, and patiently put up with the "drunk talk."  (According to one person, on his list of top 10 people, I'm #11 - how flattering).  However, all four of them agree that "boys' night rules!!"  Jess and I had a much more civilized time.  "The Phantom of the Opera" was great, we had a very nice supper, and a really good visit.  I prefer our sort of entertainment a whole lot more.  Apparently at Ryan's end, she was a pretty spectacular wife when he arrived home too.  All I can say is, they owe us.

It's Friday

Posted by: Jennifer

Lately it seems that I start to get energy at the end of the week.  This week, it's due to having a much better sleep Wednesday night and last night than I did at the beginning of the week.  The wind has just been howling, and it makes our siding creak, so I don't get good quality sleep.  Unfortunately, that tends to make me crabby during the day, and I don't seem to have much patience for things.  Some people might say that's no different from usual, but I'm inclined to disagree.  Ah well.  The wind has died down today, which makes me happier, and I'm looking forward to the weekend.  I'm going to see "Phantom of the Opera" with Jess, then we're going for supper while Jose and Ryan and who knows who else are having a boys' night.  Pizza, beer, and pool will be involved.  Jose and I may or may not go to Medicine Hat this weekend as well.  It depends on the weather.  It's not looking positive.  It would be nice to go because it's Jose's mum's birthday on Sunday.
Have a great weekend everyone!
