Weekend adventures
Posted by: Jennifer
Jose and James and I had a good weekend this weekend. On
Saturday, Jose went golfing, while James and I hung out together at
home. We went over to Jess and Ryan's for supper, and went to
see Star Wars Episode III. We went to the late show because
the earlier one was sold out, and we played Cranium until it was
time to leave. Jess and I were on a team, and were totally
kicking butt. Sadly, we didn't have time to finish the game.
We would have won I'm sure. We really enjoyed the movie.
I personally thought it was better than the two that came before it.
It was incredibly loud, so I sat with my one had over James's ear,
his other ear against my chest for most of the movie. Jose
took a turn towards the end because I was getting extremely
uncomfortable. James slept through the entire thing, which was
nice.
Yesterday, we had a really late start to the day, and just took it
easy for the afternoon. At 5:00, we went for an
hour-and-a-half walk with Jess and Ryan in one of the parks here in
the city. Sammy was totally bagged by the end, and he's taking
today to recover. Jess and Ryan came over for a late supper
after that. I think I can now say I'm a full-fledged mom.
Just before supper, I was feeding James, and he projectile vomited
on me. It was gross, it went down my back, and on the couch.
I'm so glad we have leather furniture!
James hasn't rolled over again since that first time. And he
hasn't slept quite as much during the night either. He did six
hours last night, which was still pretty impressive. I think
he was tired from the walk too. Jose carried him in the
Snuggly.

Exciting new developments

Yesterday was a big day for James. At supper time, he had his
very first bottle. He made a bit of a mess drinking from it,
but he didn't have any objections to it. Jose was the one who
fed it to him, and he was just thrilled. At the climbing wall
last night, I put him down on his blanket, and he rolled over!
It was really cool. He almost did it again, but I think he was
mad that I put him right back on his tummy after he'd accomplished
getting onto his back. He got frustrated, and didn't do it
again. And when James woke me up to eat, I was amazed to look
at the clock and see that it was 5:30! He went to bed at
11:00, and slept right through. And when I went to go get him,
he was smiling away in his bassinet. What a great way to start
your day, being greeted by a smile from the cutest, sweetest baby
ever.

Big boy

Yesterday, James weighed in at 13 pounds, 2 ounces. He's a lot
of fun right now too. He loves to play on his little baby gym,
and he smiles and makes all sorts of noises. We've been going
to a post-natal class called Baby Steps, and it's fun to get out and
hang out with people who are going through the same things we are.
Yesterday, James tried to capture the attentions of a cute little,
girl, but she ignored him, and so he fussed a little bit (which
probably didn't help him win her over). But a little later on,
he made a new friend, and so he was happier about that. It was
really cute. The other little boy was sitting on his mum's lap
facing James, who was sitting on my lap. They stared and
smiled at each other for a good five minutes (and when you're a
baby, that's a long stretch for your attention!). It was
really cute.
James slept for a good five and a half hours last night. I put
him to bed about 9:30, and he didn't get up until almost 3:00am.
I was impressed. I was reading yesterday how important it is
to establish bedtime routines, even when they're this little.
What often happens is that Jose and I will be watching TV or a movie
or playing a game or something, and James falls asleep with one of
us. We just keep him down there until we go to bed.
However, when I put him in his own bed after he ate, I think that
made him sleep much better, which is why he slept longer.
We'll be doing that from now on.
Well, I'm going to shower while James is having a nap.
Although he keeps making whining noises up there, so who knows
whether I'll get there or not. He's already had his bath.
He pooped up his back at about 8:00 this morning. So not cool.
Oh well. He had some other laundry that needed doing anyway.

This and that
Posted by: Jennifer
Here's what's been happening this week:
James turned two months old on Wednesday, and got to
celebrate by having his two month vaccinations. Poor little guy
cried, but he stopped right away when I got up and walked around with him.
He had a bit of a fever, but we only had to give him Tylenol once, and it
was gone. His little legs didn't seem to bother him that much after
that. He didn't like having his diaper changed that day though.
I know how he felt because I had to get a needle on Wednesday too.
My tetanus booster was due to be done, so the nurse figured we might as
well do it at the same time. I have to get my measles booster when
James gets his 4 month shots.
Sammy is teething - hooray!! For awhile, he looked
like a rat because he had the two middle teeth top and bottom, but there
was a tooth missing on each side (see below for a comical picture).
Hopefully this means the end of his chewing and biting is near.
James got a cool new baby gym this week. He's really
into looking at things, and he loves the bugs that hang from the top.
He tries to kick them. Earlier this week, he was in his little
chair, sitting a little lower than usual, and he started to kick at the
toys that hang from the bar that goes across. We thought that was
pretty cool - he's never done that before. He stays awake for longer
periods of time now, and it's a lot of fun to sit and talk to him.
Here's a video of him that first time in his chair.
All of us have had a bit of a cold this week. Jose
was the worst, and missed a day and a half of work. He had a fever,
and a sore throat, and he felt tired no matter how much he slept. I
had the least of it, waking up with a bit of a scratchy throat in the
mornings, and James was in the middle with a runny nose and goopy eyes.
He had a bit of a cough for a day or so, but it didn't last long.
Jose's dad, grandma, brother, and his brother's friend are
here this weekend. They can't get enough of James, and who can blame
them? We had a pupusa feast at supper tonight, and there were extra
ingredients left, so we have some pupusas waiting in the freezer for us
for another time.
My mum, James and I are going to be going to Nashville
this summer. My cousin James is getting married, and I'm really
excited to be able to go. Unfortunately, Jose can't come. Even
if plane tickets weren't super expensive, he has very little vacation time
left. My mum and I are going to go for a whole week to make the trip
really worth it. I've never been down there, so I'm really looking
forward to it. We'll spend some time in Atlanta, where my aunt and
uncle live.
At long last, here is the video of She'll be Coming Round the
Mountain. And below are some pictures. Enjoy.

Sad news and happy news
Posted by: Jennifer
My miracle fishie died this weekend. He lasted
almost two more weeks, but you could tell he wasn't himself. He
stayed kind of close to the bottom of his tank. I went to Calgary
over the weekend, and when I came back last night, he was on his side kind
of under the plant. Knowing what happened last time, I didn't rush
to have him flushed, but it's now 3:10pm, and he hasn't moved since last
night. We'll give him a nice burial at sea. Poor fishie.
We had him since February of 2004, so he did pretty well for a goldfish.
So that was my sad news. My happy news is that I
weighed James on Wednesday at my post-natal class, and he weighed 12
pounds!! He gained 1lb, 3oz. in nine days. I'll weigh him
again this Wednesday at my class, and post the result.
As I mentioned, I went to Calgary this weekend. Jose
went to Fairmont for a golf trip with some friends from work, so I decided
to head to the big city. I packed my baby, and my puppy into the
car, and we made it there and back just fine, considering I've never
driven to Calgary by myself before. It was a good trip, albeit
short. Catherine and I went to see some show homes with a friend of
Catherine's. We were hoping for some more really big ones, but we
didn't really know where to look, and so we only found one. It was a
$1.1 million home. The master bedroom was as big as the living space
in my basement, not including the his and hers walk-in closets and en
suites. This place had an elevator for crying out loud.
It was 4000 square feet on the main and top floors. I thought our
house was big, and it's only 1500 square feet! Jose had a good time
in Fairmont. Apparently his golf game was off, but it was a good
trip nonetheless. He met up with Claire and Miguel. Miguel is
living and working in Fairmont right now.
My dad is in town for the annual clergy conference, so we
had lunch with him at our house. He didn't have to be back until
2:00, so we had a bit of time for a visit.
That's all our news for now.

Update

Yikes! It's been awhile since I've done a post -
again! So sorry. Life is good. Over the weekend, James
met one of his great-grandmothers - Mama July - for the first time.
It was very cool to be able to spend Mother's Day with a grandma and a
great-grandma. It was even cooler to be celebrating Mother's Day at
all! We had a nice day. We spent some time at the mall, and
had a nice lunch out. Jose and I went to church in the evening since
we missed it at 10:00.
Speaking of church, James will be baptized on June 12.
It will be at St. Augustine's here in Lethbridge, and all are welcome.
It would be wonderful if people could make it for the service.
I have to run right now, but I'll put up some pictures
this evening, and that video that I mentioned last time.

A Fishy miracle
Posted by: Jennifer
This morning, my goldfish, which I've had for over a year
seemed extremely listless. As the morning progressed, he moved less
and less, eventually ending up belly up by the filter in the corner.
Since he wasn't moving, and stayed that way for quite some time, I
naturally assumed he was dead, and was going to get Jose to flush him at
lunch (I just can't do those kinds of things). Well, I forgot about
it because I had to rush to get ready to drop Jose off at work, then take
the baby to the doctor. Good thing too, because when I got back
later on, the fish was swimming around quite normally, looking for food,
which I gave him. He seems to be back to his normal, happy, fishy
self. I just hope he stays that way, because I didn't realize Jose
fed him at lunch time. Jose NEVER feeds the fish, so I didn't even
think about it. He felt sorry for it because it looked like it was
dying (it was no longer belly up in the corner when he came home).
He seems to be doing just fine, despite being fed twice.
As I mentioned, I took the baby to the doctor today.
He's doing very well, weighing 10 pounds, 13 ounces, and measuring 22.5
inches. When Jose and I measured him a couple of weeks ago, we got a
measurement of 23.5 inches. True, we were measuring at 1:00 in the
morning, but it seems like James has grown more than 2 inches since he was
born. I'd kind of like a second opinion on that. The doctor
thinks James may have a lazy eye, but he said it could also be that he
just hasn't found his focus point yet. I've noticed it a couple of
times myself, but he follows stuff with both eyes just fine most of the
time. We'll just keep an eye on it. Other than that,
everything looks great.
This weekend, we went up to Calgary for a baby shower.
It was a really nice shower, and I got to see a lot of people from St.
Barnabas (my previous church) that I haven't seen in ages. Once
again, James was thoroughly spoiled with clothes, toys, books, blankets,
and so much more.
I'll put some pictures up later on. And watch for a
very cute video that we'll be posting as well.
