I have all the luck

Posted by: Jennifer

I seem to get all sorts of priceless videos. Many involving poop. Here's the latest one: James and his bugs

We've had a busy week as usual. Just on a regular basis we're busy: Tuesdays James and I go to "The Living Room" a parents' group at St. Augustine's. On Wednesdays, we go to our baby group, we try to go swimming either Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and on Thursdays we go climbing.

On Saturday, Jose and Ryan put together a BBQ party for Jess's and my joint birthdays.  It was so much fun.  Jess was given a volleyball set, and we set it up and played.  It was a hoot!  After, we went to the house of friends of Jess and Ryan and played "Don't Be a Dork."  It was screamingly fun.  We have to get that game.  James fell asleep and slept through the whole thing!  I couldn't believe it, we were so incredibly loud.  What a good little boy.

On Tuesday this week, we went swimming, and had quite a good time. Since he has a shower at the pool, I brought jammies for him to wear home. Good thing too because he fell asleep in the car and was so out of it, that he would not wake up even when I deliberately spoke loudly as I got him out of his car seat. He hadn't napped much during the day, and then all the kicking in the pool can tire a little guy out!

Last night after climbing, Jose played indoor soccer with Ryan and James and their team, and Jess and I walked from their house to the soccer centre, a walk that took us about an hour. It took an hour partly because James started crying, and wouldn't stop. He doesn't usually cry like that, so I carried him for a quarter of the way. Man is he heavy! My back will never be the same. It was a good walk other than that though. he fell asleep in the car on the way home, and was once again so conked out, he wouldn't wake up, so I just put him to bed in his clothes. That was around 10:20 or so, and he didn't wake up until 6:40. I was thrilled. Even then, he wasn't really crying, he was still asleep, and just complaining. I put his soosie in and he slept for another half an hour.

Yesterday, James sampled oat cereal, and seemed to like it quite well. That's his third type of cereal. Next is wheat cereal, but one of the moms in our group said that you're not supposed to introduce wheat until the baby is 10 months old due to the possibility of developing allergies. Her doctor told her that. However, the information from the Chinook Health Region says first rice, then barley, oat and finally wheat within the four to six month range. I'm going to double check, but it should be fine. After that, probably towards the end of next week, he'll try some veggies.

Sam had his splint changed today, and apparently, his leg is still floppy. The vet is going to call up to Calgary and see what's up. She said she'd give me a call tomorrow. I just want his leg to be better. He's sick to death of it all, and so are we. It would be so nice to be able to take him for a walk again. He's so annoying at the vet. He never gets out anymore, so he's totally hyper, and he's going to do himself an injury. He stays really quiet at home though, which is good considering his leg is still gimped.

Here are some great pictures and a couple more videos.

He picked up the raisin!!!

Posted by: Jennifer

It has been an exciting week!  On Sunday, James had his first haircut.  Aunties Claire and Catherine and Miguel were here because Claire and Miguel had a wedding to go to, and Claire brought her scissors to give James a much needed trim.  He was very good about the whole thing, and looks very nice.  It's incredible how much older just a haircut makes him look.  Jose and I also got "Claire-dos".  Jose got a trim, and I got my highlights redone.

Speaking of hair, the picture in the last post of James's Mohawk was not contrived.  He woke up like that!!  I did absolutely nothing to it.

On Monday, my mum came down just for the day.  We had a nice visit, and went for a walk.  My mum got a cake for my birthday, and we celebrated a day early.

On Tuesday, I turned 25.  Jose got me a bottle of my favourite perfume, and James got me Toy Story which has come out on DVD.  We went out for supper with Jess and Ryan at The Attic, a good restaurant if you're in town looking for a place to eat.  Unfortunately, our server was new, and not very experienced, so there were some issues, oddly enough, only with Ryan's meal though.  After that, we went over to Jess and Ryan's with the cake my mum brought.

On Wednesday, James and I met with our baby group.  Last week, some of the moms had taken their babies for their six month shots, and were telling us about this horrible test that babies are subjected to called the Denver test.  They were rather annoyed because the nurse had put a raisin in front of their babies to see if the baby would pick it up.  Neither baby did, and they were a little worried about how their child was going to be perceived come kindergarten.  Their hype over the whole thing made me a little nervous, so when I got home from our group last week, I put a raisin in front of James to see if he would pick it up and he did.  However, one of the mom's was put out because the raisin was brown and the desk was brown, and our table is white, so I wasn't sure how he'd do.  The moms also told the rest of us about a battery of questions put to them about their babies' development.  I have to admit, I was a little nervous when we went for his shots on Thursday.  I shouldn't have bothered.  The questions the nurse asked seemed like pretty standard questions to make sure James is where he should be as far as his development goes.  She asked if he babbles and if he reaches for things, things like that.  She was impressed that he bends over to grab things when he's standing up.  Other little "tests" she did was move a red pom-pom in front of him to watch if he followed it with his eyes (he did, and reached for it too), she put two blocks in front of them to see if he'd pick one up with each hand (he did), then she took one of the blocks away to see if he would transfer the block to his other hand at some point (he did), and she tested his hearing while he played with a toy (he looked toward the sound like he was supposed to).  And yes, she put a raisin in front of him to see if he picked it up.  And he picked it up.  What can I say, my boy's a genius!  She was actually very excited when he grabbed it, which led me to believe that not a whole lot of babies pass that test.  I think the other moms freaked out unnecessarily.  It's not so much a pass/fail if the kid doesn't go for the raisin.  I mean, it really isn't the most exciting thing a baby has ever seen.  They're testing more to make sure the baby isn't way behind developmentally.  It's a way to target potential problems early.  And my baby has none.  He won't be taking the short bus to school!

Today, James received a very large gift.  Sears called us to tell us that there was a high chair for us to pick up.  Mama Loli had ordered a high chair for James!  We were quite excited about it.  Now that he eats cereal, it's been a challenge to find the best place to put him while he eats.  Now our problem is solved.  It's a very nice high chair with a bib bar at the back, and a toy bar that can be pulled in front.  The height adjusts, and it has a tray that can come off and go in the dishwasher.  He tried it out this evening to eat his cereal, and he had a lot of fun in it.

Well, I think I've babbled enough.  I'll post some pictures and videos.  Don't forget to scroll down and take our poll!!

"Cone"-an the Barbarian

Posted by: Jennifer

Sammy has now got used to his cone, and we've started to get used to seeing him in it. Since he's so low to the ground, when his head goes up and down with his limp, his cone smacks the floor. There's no way he can sneak up on us! And I'm sure we get better reception on the TV when he's around :)

In the world of James, he never stays in the same spot for very long when he's on the floor. I think he'll be crawling in no time. He's able to push himself up all the way with his arms, and he'll push up with his legs, now all he needs to do is get them both working together. He sits up pretty well by himself now. He still tips backwards every now and then, but he's getting really good at putting his hands to the side to balance himself. He has two little lumps visible in his bottom gum. I thought for sure they'd pop out this week because his cheeks have been flushed, and he's been kind of crabby, not really himself. But they're not here yet.

Jose is going to sign up to be a ski patroller at Castle Mountain. We went to an information session this week at the university, and he thinks it's something he'd like to do this winter. He has to go through a very intensive first aid and training course and at the end of it, he has to do a test on the hill to see if his boarding skills are up to par. If not, he can try again next year. He'll have to be able to snowboard in all conditions, and on all the hills at Castle. He'll also have to be able to snowboard pulling a toboggan. If he makes it, he'll have to be on duty three days a month. There's a place where patrollers and their families can stay for $7 a night if he's doing a Saturday-Sunday stint. He wants to get into shape before the test, so I think he's going to join a gym. We have a pass for the Lethbridge Fitness Club for three months free, so that would be the most reasonable option.

Speaking of getting in shape, I've been trying to be much more active as well. I've been taking James out for a walk pretty much every day. Sometimes Jose joins us, but he detests walking just for the sake of walking, so it's kind of a big thing when he joins us. Poor Sammy cries every time we leave the house, especially when James is in his stroller. He's desperate to get out and walk. We've also taken up swimming. We've gone twice this week. We went tonight because our climbing group had other commitments. We decided we didn't want to the climbing wall ourselves so we swam instead. We took turns swimming lengths. James quite likes the water. He likes the taste of it, and when we don't let him put his salty fingers in his mouth, he splashes with his mouth open instead and "accidentally" gets it in his mouth. He's very cute in his little trunks, kicking away. I'm trying to do more Pilates and stuff too. So with all this fitness, and with me still nursing, I'm noticing that I'm slimming down quite a bit. I'm thrilled. I think I look better than I did before I got pregnant.

Well, I think that's it for now. Don't forget to check our our poll (below in the previous post). We're going to try to have a monthly poll. If you have any good ideas on what we should poll people about, let us know via e-mail. We'll post the results at the end of the month.
