February has certainly been an interesting month in our household. It started off with a trip to Calgary for an eye appointment for Jose, coinciding with our friends’ wedding. It was quite the weekend. We had terrible driving conditions, and Jose’s eye pressure was way too high, despite new drops he’d received the previous visit, and was told that if it wasn’t down in two weeks, he’d have to have more surgery. The wedding was tons of fun however, and it was awesome to see some old university friends.
That following Monday, I had a check-up with my doctor. Everything is great, and the doctor is really pleased. Baby was hiding a bit though, and it was tough to find the heartbeat. The heartbeat was excellent once it was found though. James came along to the appointment, and was as good as gold. He made a little friend in the waiting room. A friend he insisted on calling “Baby” even though the boy was about a month older!
After that, we had a week’s worth of non-stop snow. It started coming down on Thursday the 8th or so, and didn’t stop falling until the following Wednesday! It was unbelievable! Especially for Lethbridge. Of course, the day after it stopped, the Chinook kicked in bringing with it sun and lots of wind. It has been blowing ever since. The fact that we still have a ton of snow in our front yard is testament to how much we got in the first place. Our backyard gets more sun, and the snow is almost gone. Sam delights in walking through the mud.
During the week of snow, Jose and James both got wicked colds. Jose missed a day of work, and kept James home with him. James had been really crabby with Michelle the day before, and we figured he needed a day of rest. The two boys basically lay in bed and watched movies and snoozed all day. Apparently, misery loves company because Wednesday night, I didn’t sleep more than 2 hours altogether. I had been feeling crummy all day, but the night time was awful. My sinuses hurt, and I just couldn’t get comfortable. Needless to say, I spent the next day at home. That night, I phoned the Health Link to get some suggestions on what I could do for my sinus pain (the problem with having a cold while being pregnant is that there’s nothing you can take!). I ended up being told to go to a clinic (the only one open at the time being emergency) because I had a slight fever – not good for Baby. I wish I hadn’t gone because I ended up waiting in emerg. for ever (as expected), but then when I finally went to find somebody after waiting in a room for over 2 hours, the nurse realised I had been completely forgotten because my chart had been left behind!! I got to the hospital at 9:00, and didn't leave until 1:30am. Then, when the doctor came, he was rude, and curt, and of course, I didn't have a fever by then, so he treated me like an over-careful, hysterical pregnant woman. He told me to get some rest, at which point I just about threw something at him!
However, we are all on the mend now. James has had a fever the last couple of days, but advice I’ve been given from nurses and books is not to take him in until he’s at 40ºC. And after my experience, I’m not too keen to ever go to emergency ever again.
Jose’s eye is also on the mend. He went back to the doctor in Calgary on Friday, and his pressure dropped significantly. The doctor was super happy – no surgery! He found out that it would have been the whole corneal transplant all over again. Not cool at all.
Baby seems to be doing well despite all my coughing too. I’m feeling tons of movement. Especially being at home in bed, and concentrating on anything else! I have an ultrasound booked for March 5th. We’ll be sure to post the pictures. It’s unmistakable that I’m pregnant too. My maternity clothes are starting to look like actually I need them.
That’s all for now! Stay in touch,
Jennifer
